Interview Tuesdays with Yasmeen Thompson | Baker & Youtuber

Welcome to the first-ever Interview Tuesdays with your host.

Tasha Battle.

With all the things going on in the world, I thought that this would be the perfect time to dive deep into what I want my blog to stand for. I have always advertised my blog as a lifestyle blog, but what does that really mean?

Like what kind of content can people expect from me every week?

I started thinking about all the things I am passionate about and came up with a list of items. I am passionate about women empowerment, productivity hacks, food, travel, diversity, and black history. And that’s how I got the idea to start this series, which will highlight all the fantastic and talented things that women of color are doing to contribute to make this world a better place.

Now that the introduction to this series has been made.

Let’s get to our very first Interview Tuesdays with the lovely Yasmeen Thompson.

Yasmeen Thompson Is the owner of Yassy’s Treats, a small bakery business and PinkBlingz, a small electronic custom-made cases business. Yasmeen has owned these respective businesses for over a year and has been growing steadily as the months go by. Yasmeen has been able to reach her consumer base by using social media and word of mouth. She also has her own Youtube Channel that showcases her many talents ranging from DIYS to VLOGs to cooking videos.

I was able to interview Yasmeen in June to discuss her thriving business ventures, passions, advice, and plans for the future.

Interview

Tasha: Tell me about yourself and your business

Yasmeen: My name is Yasmeen, and I’m the owner of Yassy’s Treats. I started Yassy’s Treats in 2019 because I enjoyed baking and watching cooking shows. It was an outlet for me to have fun and do what I like to do. Before I started the business, I started doing Youtube videos. My company has picked up since 2019 and has grown due to the investments I’ve made and the things I am learning as I go from getting better equipment, trying out new baking goods, to changing out packaging. It’s all been growth.

Tasha: What are your favorite treats to cook?

Yasmeen: Caramel Pecan Clusters! They are the easiest to cook and people seem to like them a lot.

Tasha: What kind of challenges do you face as a black woman in the baking industry?

Yasmeen: I watch The Food Network, and I have yet to see a black person there. I have seen a few in the past but not currently. I would eventually want to work myself up to have my own show on The Food Network. I have been writing pitches for The Food Network, BET, KERA, and TVOne that I keep in my binder. I would love to see more black chefs and bakers on TV.

Tasha: Where do you see Yassy’s Treats in the next five years?

Yasmeen: In the next five years, I will have people working for me. I am currently doing excellent work alone. The more I network and promote my business, the more customers I receive. So, I hope to have people working for me, helping me grow my business.

Tasha: What have you learned so far from owning your own business?

Yasmeen: If you have more than one talent, you don’t need to stop at that one talent. I feel like you don’t have to box yourself in and only do that one thing you’re good at. You can try out other business ventures too as long as you focus on making those business ventures successful. I am good at a lot of things, but I am currently focusing on my baking business. I think you can do what you want as long as your confident and never stop believing in your abilities as a business owner.

Tasha: How have you been able to balance being a mother and owning a business?

Yasmeen: It’s been hard. I am a single parent, and I do have the help of my parents, but they have their own lives. So if they’re not available to watch her as I work, then I will have to multitask between handling her and working on my business. I do manage to get through it and find the time to work on my business.

Tasha: What do you hope that your daughter learns from seeing you as a businesswoman?

Yasmeen: I hope that she learns that she can do whatever she wants to do as long as she works hard and never gives up on herself.

Tasha: What advice would you give to your former younger self?

Yasmeen: Just do it. I use to be so scared to start, but I am all about trying new things. Life is too short. Just do it.

Tasha: Do you have any advice for others who want to own their own business but are unsure?

Yasmeen: I don’t think it’s unsure, I think it’s more about people being afraid of failing and not being successful. I think with that , it can be challenging but you need to work on it and go for it. Just bet on yourself. Don’t let the lack of support in the beginning get you down, because the support will come. Your personality will get you in a lot of doors, so be kind and friendly. Stay at it. It will all work out in the end.

Tasha: What do you want your brand to be remembered as?

Yasmeen: I want people to remember me as hardworking, kind, detail-oriented, and very professional. I want my business to be known for having excellent customer service and fantastic food.

Tasha: Due to the climate of what’s currently going on in the world, how important do you think black business is?

Yasmeen: I think black business has ALWAYS been important. Most people don’t support black businesses as much as they support Nike and other white-owned companies. People will always try to question black businesses ’ prices and their products before buying. I feel like people should support black businesses without questions or asking for discounts, especially during this climate. If people want to make a change, they need to support and advocate for more black businesses.

Tasha: What are your favorite black businesses in Dallas, TX?

Yasmeen: Mickle’s Cajun Kitchen. To keep black businesses open, it’s essential to support and show love any time that I can. I would hate not to support, and then something happens where the companies can no longer stay open.

Tasha: Do you have any products you sell besides treats?

Yasmeen: I have another business, Pink Blingz, where I sell girly IWatch cases. I noticed there were a lot of plain IWatch case options. So I decided to custom make them for others. It’s available to order through PinkBlingz’s Instagram page @PinkBlingz, and I do ship.

Tasha: How can people order your baked goods?

Yasmeen: To order any treats from Yassy’s Treats, order them through Instagram @Yassy_Treats, email order at yassystreats@yahoo.com, or call (214-489-1866)to place an order. I am local in Dallas, TX, but I do ship.

End of Interview

Thanks to Yasmeen Thompson for allowing me to interview her before she blows up. I am so excited to see where she goes from here. I hope that her business continues to grow and that she accomplishes everything her heart desires. It would mean the world if you would go support this fellow black queen and her business.

See you next Tuesday at 3PM for another Interview Tuesdays.
